PURPOSE
- Handle all aspects of costume alterations and construction of new costumes related to Norwegian Cruise Line’s theatrical production and Brand costume operation.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
- Sew theatrical costumes to the specifics requested by management, in a timely fashion.
- Ability to use company size chart to take measurement of performers.
- Operate commercial and industrial equipment to include: Single needle industrial sewing machine, industrial serger, double needle cover stitch machine, industrial ruffler, patch machine, industrial steamers and irons.
- Must be able to handle complex alterations on couture garments and to be able to alter tailored garments in a professional manner and time frame.
- Ability to construct and alter theatrical costumes using NCLH seam allowance guidelines and techniques.
- Must be able to take instruction in a professional and positive manner.
- Must be able to work in a team environment and maintain a professional work ethic.
- Must be able to work on several projects and productions at the same time.
- Perform crafts and millinery building and repair.
- Possible travel to assist in cast change over onboard.
- Perform other job-related functions as assigned.
JOB DESCRIPTION
DIMENSIONS
- Theatrical wardrobe department handles 28 ships on a six-month rotation. Each ship has production shows which are refit, rehabbed and altered for new incoming cast.
- Possible accommodation of 1,800 costume pieces handled at once during busiest times where many ships are rehearsing at once.
- Overall, costumes worked on will reach approximately 16,500 per 6 months/ 33,000 per year.
- Costume complete replacement/ rebuilds equal approximately 100 pieces a year.
NATURE & SCOPE
- Reports to Costume Shop Manager, Incumbent liaises with Costume Specialist, Assistant and Wardrobe Supervisors for an efficient cast dress rehearsal and onboard installation in an ever-changing scope of the unique environment of the entertainment cruise line industry.
- Theatrical Wardrobe Stitcher must be able to handle alterations quickly and efficiently as to be able to reach deadlines for dress runs and costume shipping.
- Required to multi-task several different projects at once.
- Will work with many different personalities within the costume shop and in the rehearsal studios.
EDUCATION
- Bachelor’s degree in Theatrical Costuming or related field of study; or any equivalent combination of relevant background and work experience.
EXPERIENCE
- Minimum 2 years costume shop experience in theatrical costume building and alteration, ship experience fitting and altering costumes or experience working on tour or in summer stock companies.
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
- Expertise in theatrical alteration, hand and machine sewing, Knowledge of cruise ship entertainment operations. Knowledge of theatrical wardrobe practices and principles. Ability to effectively communicate with internal and external contacts, including remote team onboard ships. Sound problem solving.
